5 Steps To Clear The Clutter From Your Garage

With the arrival of March, many of us are looking forward to spring and seeing the snow melt here in Simcoe County. Warmer weather and the arrival of spring means that many of us will begin to go outside to enjoy the warmer temperatures.

Spring is also typically a time where we undergo spring cleaning tasks to remove any clutter that has built up in our homes, either over the winter or over time.

The two most commonly cluttered areas of our homes are often the basement and the garage.

If you’re looking to eliminate some of the clutter this spring, check out these steps to effectively clean your garage.

But First…Work Smarter, Not Harder

Eliminating clutter from your garage can take a significant amount of time. A way to speed up the process is to have somewhere to store items that you are throwing away. Our roll-off bins can help you sort your items a lot easier. Rather than having to wait to throw out any broken items, having a roll-off bin on your front lawn allows for easy and quick waste removal. Whether you require bins for the day for an easy job or for a longer period of time, we have you covered. The best part? We make things easy for you. We deliver the bin, you fill it and we remove it.

Step 1: Remove Everything From Your Garage

One of the first steps to getting rid of some of the clutter in your garage is to take out everything that’s in there. Pick where you want to start in your garage and pull the items out on to your driveway. Removing your items from your garage gives you the chance to see everything that you own and then decide if you want to keep it or not. It also allows you to see what kind of space you’re working with and any potential storage options.

Step 2: Decide What You Want To Keep

A lot of items in the garage are there for two reasons: they are being used or because you ran out of space in your home and you had nowhere else to put it. It helps to sort your items into four piles: keep, donate, trash or sell.

Some tips for what to keep during a garage cleanout:

  • Items that you have used more than once in the past year
  • Items that work and aren’t broken
  • Items that can’t be easily rented or borrowed

Step 3: Get Rid of Unnecessary Items

After you’ve gone through and identified the items you want to keep, begin sorting through the items you don’t want to keep, to see what you could donate, sell or throw away. If you’re using one of our roll-off bins, throwing away broken, damaged items will be easy.

Step 4: Clean the Space

After you’ve gone through your items, it’d be best to clean your garage before putting everything back, especially if it’s been a while since you cleaned your garage. Dust, dirt, and cobwebs will most likely have accumulated over time. The best way to clean up your garage is top to bottom, by starting off with dusting off your cabinets and shelves. Then, wipe down any cabinets and shelves with a warm damp cloth and then sweep the floor to get rid of any dust. Hose off your garage floor to get the extra dirt and allow it to dry.

Step 5: Maintain Your Organized Garage

After all the hard work, the final step is to put your items back in an organized way. The organization is all about using what space you have available.  Here are some tips for how to do this:

  • Use shelving units to make use of what space you have
  • Use a pegboard to hang up your tools
  • Use wall hooks for larger items, such as shovels or rakes
  • Group items by category
